7.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Passing Fancy remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a real Tuesday afternoon, then yes. Watch it. If you need explosions or a plot that moves at warp speed, you’ll probably find this thing painfully slow. It’s for people who like to watch characters just exist in a room.
There is this moment about halfway through where they’re just eating, and the way the light hits the bowls—it’s distracting in the best way. I found myself staring at the background furniture instead of the dialogue. It’s that kind of movie.
Ozu has this trick where he puts the camera so low it feels like you’re sitting on the floor with them. It makes the living room feel crowded, even when there's only two people talking. It’s claustrophobic but cozy.
The whole premise of two guys taking in a stranger sounds like the start of a sitcom, but it never goes there. Thank god. It stays grounded in that weird, awkward silence that happens when you don't really know how to talk to the person living in your house.
It’s honestly refreshing compared to stuff like The Thief where everything has to be high stakes and dramatic. Here, the biggest drama is just a guy feeling a bit embarrassed about his own kindness. We’ve all been there, right? You try to do a good deed and end up just making things more complicated for yourself.
There’s a scene near the end—I won’t spoil it—but the way someone just stares out a window? It lingered for maybe five seconds too long. It felt like they forgot they were on camera. That’s the stuff I love.
It isn't a perfect film. Sometimes the pacing hits a wall and you’re just waiting for someone to say something. But maybe that’s the point. Real life doesn't have a tight script. Sometimes you just sit there and wait for the bus, or wait for someone to make the first move.
If you’re coming from watching something like Danger Lights, this is going to be a massive shift in gear. Just keep that in mind. It’s quiet. It’s sad. It’s kind of funny if you’re in the right mood. Don't overthink it. Just watch the way they hold their tea cups. It’s all there. 🍵
