6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Born to Be Bad remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies where the lead character is absolutely exhausting to be around, you’ll love this. If you need a hero to root for, or at least someone who isn't a total nightmare, stay away. It’s a black-and-white grift-fest that feels strangely modern in its cruelty. 🚬
Loretta Young is really the only reason this sticks. She plays this character with a kind of sharp, jagged edge that makes everyone else look like they’re walking through molasses. She isn't just bad; she’s efficiently bad.
The whole premise hinges on a hit-and-run, which feels like it should be the emotional anchor, but the movie immediately pivots into a blackmail scheme. It’s a bit jarring. You’re waiting for someone to act like a human being, but they just keep trading favors and threats like they're playing cards in a basement.
There’s this one scene where she’s holding court, and the way she uses her eyes... man. It’s less like acting and more like she’s measuring the room for curtains. You can feel the other actors shrinking back just a little bit.
The film moves fast, maybe too fast. It skips over all the stuff that would actually make sense and jumps straight into the next confrontation. It reminds me of the manic energy in The Married Virgin, where things just happen because the plot says so, consequences be damned.
Also, the guys in this movie? Totally useless. They’re all just furniture for her to lean against while she plots her next move. Cary Grant shows up, and even he seems a bit confused about why he’s there. He looks like he’s waiting for the scene to end so he can go get a sandwich. 🥪
I don't think this is a 'classic' by any stretch. It’s too prickly for that. But it’s got a weird, sour flavor that I can’t quite shake. It isn't trying to teach you anything. It just wants to show you how low a person can go for a paycheck, and honestly, that’s refreshing in its own way. It’s not as goofy as Oh Teacher, but it’s definitely got that same 'we made this in a week' vibe. Worth a watch if you’re in a cynical mood.
