7.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Peter remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school comedies where everyone is running around confused by pants and wigs, sure. It’s light, it’s breezy, and it doesn't try to be anything other than a romp. If you need your movies to be gritty or realistic, stay far away. This is pure fluff, but it’s the kind of fluff that actually has a pulse.
Franciska Gaal is basically doing all the heavy lifting here. She has this frantic energy that makes you forget how ridiculous the plot is for a solid hour. Watching her try to act like a 'boy' while clearly being the most expressive person in every room is just good fun. She sells it.
The whole 'disguise' trope is so tired, right? Like, we’ve seen it a thousand times since The Secret Studio or whatever other flick you want to name. But there’s something about the way the camera lingers on her face when she’s caught in a lie—it’s not acting, it’s just pure panic. You can tell she’s having a blast with the absurdity of it all.
There is this one scene—I think it’s halfway through—where the confusion hits a breaking point and the dialogue just stops making sense. It feels like the writers got bored and decided to just let the actors improvise their way out of a corner. It’s messy, but honestly? I liked it better than the polished stuff.
Some of the side characters are just… there. They stand around looking confused while the lead does all the work. It reminds me a bit of the pacing in Their Purple Moment where things move just fast enough that you don't notice the plot holes until you're already in the parking lot driving home.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it better than watching a generic modern drama where nobody speaks above a whisper for two hours? Absolutely. Sometimes you just want to see a teenager wearing a fake mustache and causing a riot in a cafe. 🎺
The ending feels a bit rushed, like someone yelled 'cut' and they just went with the last take they had. It doesn’t wrap up perfectly, but who cares? Life doesn't wrap up perfectly either.
