6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Private Scandal remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old movies where people talk at double-speed and look like they haven't slept in three days, then yeah, sure. If you need a movie to make sense or have a moral center, stay away. This is for the folks who want to see 1934 version of a tabloid fever dream.
ZaSu Pitts is doing her usual thing, which is essentially being the only person in the room who looks like they’re having a nervous breakdown while everyone else is busy being a jerk. It’s weirdly hypnotic. She’s got these fluttery hands that seem like they might just take off and fly away from the scene entirely.
The dialogue is so fast you’ll miss half of it if you try to check your phone for a second. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Skippy, though much less sentimental and way more concerned with who is sleeping with whom. People are constantly walking into rooms they shouldn't be in.
There's this one scene where Ned Sparks is just being his grumpy self, and he looks so tired of the script that it actually makes the scene better. It’s like he knows the movie is a bit of a shaggy dog story, but he’s still going to get his paycheck. I respect that.
Honestly, the whole "blackmail" angle is a little thin, even for the thirties. It feels like the writers got halfway through a scene and realized they forgot to include a plot point, so they just shoved one in. It’s messy. I don’t hate it for that.
If you’re looking for something deep, go watch Eifersucht or something else that makes you feel bad about being alive. But if you just want to kill an hour watching people in 1934 act like absolute lunatics, this fits the bill. It’s not great art. It’s barely even good art. But it sure is a movie.
Also, the hats. The hats in this movie are something else. You’ll know what I mean when you see the fedoras. Why were they so tall? It’s distracting.
