5.3/10

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Red-Headed Baby remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Alright, so Red-Headed Baby is definitely a blast from the past. If you're into old-school cartoons, the kind they just don't make anymore, you might get a kick out of this one. Otherwise, folks expecting Pixar-level storytelling are gonna be pretty bored, pretty fast.
It's a simple premise, really. You got this sweet little red-headed doll and her toy soldier fella, Napoleon, just wanting to be happy in a dusty old toy shop.
But then this real nasty spider shows up, and he's got bad intentions. 🕷️
It's a classic damsel-in-distress thing, but with toys, which is kind of charming in its own way.
The animation style is… well, it’s very much of its time. A little jerky sometimes, but it’s got a certain hand-drawn charm you don't see anymore.
Those big, round eyes on the baby doll are a bit unsettling, honestly, but also kind of cute.
And the spider? He's got this *truly evil* laugh, all scratchy and over-the-top. You know he's the bad guy right away.
Napoleon, the toy soldier, he's got that classic brave but maybe a little stiff vibe. He stands tall, even when facing something much bigger.
The whole thing feels like it was made to make kids smile for ten minutes, and it probably did a great job of that back when it came out.
There's this moment where the spider tries to tie up the baby doll, and it’s surprisingly tense for a cartoon. You actually feel a tiny bit worried for her.
And the music! The Rhythmettes really do their thing here. It's bouncy, you know? Makes you tap your foot a bit, even if the lyrics are kinda simple.
It's not trying to be anything more than it is, which is refreshing. Just a quick, fun, good-vs-evil story.
You can tell the animators had some fun with the spider's wobbly legs and how he scurries across the floor.
The sheer pluck of that toy soldier, Napoleon. He doesn't even have a real weapon, just his tiny bayonet, but he charges right in.
The ending is exactly what you expect, nice and neat, a happy little bow on top, everyone where they should be.
It’s more of a curio, a little peek into old animation, than a masterpiece you need to seek out. But hey, for a few minutes, it’s a sweet, simple ride. Maybe a nice watch with a cup of tea on a slow afternoon. ☕
