5.4/10

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Renegades of the West remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you've got a soft spot for B-movie westerns from the early thirties, Renegades of the West is going to hit that weirdly specific itch. If you need complex character arcs or, I don't know, a coherent plot that doesn't feel like it was stitched together with twine, maybe skip this one. It’s for the folks who just want to watch hats get knocked off and horses gallop across some dry brush.
Tom Keene plays the lead with a sort of stoic intensity that mostly involves him narrowing his eyes at people. He goes to jail just to hunt for clues about his father’s killer, which is a pretty extreme way to do detective work. I mean, usually you just check the records, right? But hey, it gets him onto the ranch, which is where the movie actually starts breathing.
The whole ranch setting feels a bit cramped, like they didn't have the budget for more than two acres of desert. It’s funny how these films make the world feel so small. When his old cellmate, Blackie, shows up, you know everything is going to hit the fan. It’s the kind of predictable drama that somehow still works because the pacing is just fast enough that you don't have time to ask why nobody recognizes him immediately.
There is a scene involving a safe that takes way too long. It’s just a lot of shuffling and dramatic whispering. It feels like the camera was trying to hide the fact that the safe wasn't actually locked or something. Honestly, it’s charming in a 'we’re doing this in one take and moving on' sort of way.
It’s nowhere near as weird as The Interloper, but it’s got a similar 'low budget, high spirit' energy. You can tell they were trying to punch above their weight class. Sometimes they land a hit, sometimes they just swing at thin air. The dialogue is mostly just guys grunting at each other while leaning against fence posts. It’s surprisingly relaxing if you don't think about it too hard.
Small things I noticed:
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s a relic that’s held up okay, mostly because it doesn't try to be anything but what it is. You'll forget the names of the bad guys five minutes after the credits roll. But for a quick hour of dusty revenge, it’s not the worst way to spend a rainy afternoon. 🤠
