Rio Rattler: A Western That Doesn't Quite Get There

Should you watch Rio Rattler? If you are the kind of person who enjoys the crackle of a scratched film print and the sight of guys in dusty hats walking through the same three canyons, sure. It is a quick hit for fans of the genre. If you need logic, pacing, or dialogue that doesn't sound like it was scribbled on a napkin during lunch, you will probably hate it.

The plot moves like a horse that just realized it has somewhere to be. Our guy Tom ends up as a fake Marshal because he dropped some papers during a scrap. It is a classic trope, maybe even a bit lazy, but it works for what it is. The town feels like a set built yesterday, and honestly, it kind of is.

There is this moment in the middle where the villain realizes Tom is a fake. The way they pivot from trying to kill him to wanting to arrest him for the original murder is just wild. It is like the scriptwriter suddenly remembered they needed more conflict. I sat there laughing because the transition is so abrupt it practically gives you whiplash.

The action scenes are what you would expect from a film this old. The punches look like they miss by a solid foot, and the stuntmen are clearly just having a rough afternoon. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Silent Code, though maybe with less charm.

Some of the extras in the background look like they are just waiting for the craft services table to open. You can see one guy leaning against a wall in the background of a tense standoff, checking his watch or something. It is that kind of movie. It doesn't care if you notice the seams.

Is it better than Born to the West? Hard to say. It certainly has less polish, if that is even possible. The lighting is harsh, the shadows are deep, and the whole thing feels like it was filmed in a heatwave.
