6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Rustlers' Valley remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have an hour to spare on a lazy Sunday, Rustlers' Valley is absolutely worth a spin. It is perfect for anyone who finds comfort in the simple creak of leather and horses galloping across dusty California hills.
But if you cannot stand predictable plots or cowboys who explain their entire plan out loud, you will probably hate this. It is very much a product of its time. 🤠
This is a Hopalong Cassidy flick, which means William Boyd is riding around being incredibly polite while shooting guns out of bad guys' hands. This time, his buddy Lucky gets framed for a bank heist.
The whole thing is a setup by a crooked lawyer who wants to steal a bunch of fancy pedigree cows. It is a classic, simple setup.
I always forget how young Lee J. Cobb looks in these early roles. He plays the lawyer, and he has this hilariously intense energy that feels way too big for a B-western.
It is like he is auditioning for Shakespeare while everyone else is just trying not to get kicked by their horse. It made me laugh out loud a couple of times.
Speaking of horses, the stunt riding in this is actually pretty wild. There is one moment where a guy gets dragged behind a horse and it looks genuinely painful.
No stunt doubles could hide that rough landing. The frantic energy of the chases reminded me a bit of Mickey's Polo Team, just with way more real dirt.
Let's talk about Gabby Hayes for a second. The man is a national treasure of weird mumbles.
He grumbles through almost every scene. Half the time I do not think he is even saying real words, but it just works.
The plot does get a bit tangled up in some boring paperwork stuff near the middle. There is a scene where they just look at a map for what feels like five minutes.
I actually zoned out and started looking at the background extras. One guy in the back is wearing a hat that looks three sizes too big.
But the movie gets going again once the shooting starts. It does not have the grand romantic scope of something like Rose of the Golden West, but it knows exactly what it is.
It is a cozy, dusty hour of good guys winning. Sometimes that is all you really need on a quiet afternoon.
