4.8/10

A definitive 4.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Saa til søs remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you like watching people sit around in sweaters and complain about the weather. If you want high-octane thrills, you are in the wrong place. But if you have a soft spot for dusty, black-and-white comedies where the stakes are mostly about whether the coffee is hot enough, then Saa til søs might just hit the spot.
Ole, Jens, and Peter are the kind of characters you feel like you’ve met before. They have that specific, curmudgeonly energy you see in films like The Drifters, where the sea is a character all its own. They aren't trying to change the world. They are just trying to get through the day without losing their minds.
There is something about the way this movie is shot that feels like looking at an old postcard you found in an attic. It’s not polished. Sometimes the lighting hits an actor's face in a way that makes them look like they’re being interrogated, which is honestly kind of funny. 🐟
The pace is… well, it’s slow. Very slow. There’s a scene early on where they’re mending nets that goes on for what feels like an eternity. I started counting the knots. I think I got to fifty before I stopped caring.
The chemistry between the three leads is the only reason this doesn’t sink. You can tell they’ve been working together forever. When they bicker, it feels real. It’s not that performative stuff you see in modern rom-coms. It’s just three guys who have run out of things to say to each other but can't bear to leave the room.
It reminded me a bit of the simplicity in A Little Bit of Everything, just with more salt air and fewer pretenses. You get the sense that the director just let the camera roll and hoped for the best. Sometimes it pays off. Other times, you’re just watching an old man stare at a wall for ten seconds too long. ⚓
Don't look for a deep moral lesson here. You won't find one. It’s just a snapshot of a place that probably doesn’t exist anymore, populated by guys who are mostly just tired of each other's habits. It’s imperfect, it’s a little bit boring, and I’m glad I watched it on a rainy Tuesday.
