7.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Scram! remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you've got twenty minutes and a soft spot for guys getting into trouble for no reason, Scram! is exactly what you need. It's not high art. It’s just Stan and Ollie being their usual selves, which is to say, they are absolutely hopeless in the best way possible. If you don't find two grown men trying to act sophisticated while looking like total wrecks funny, skip it. Everyone else? You’ll probably have a good time.
The whole thing kicks off with a judge telling them to "scram" out of town. It’s that classic setup where they have absolutely nowhere to go. They run into this guy who’s completely plastered, and he’s all, "Hey, come sleep at my place!" You know exactly where this is going, and that’s the fun of it. The pacing is frantic, almost like a Way Out West vibe but way more cramped.
There is this one moment where they’re trying to navigate the house, and I swear, the timing feels like it was put together by someone who just really likes watching people be uncomfortable. The physical comedy isn't overly polished. It’s messy. It’s loud. There’s a lot of people just standing around looking confused while Stan tries to explain something that makes zero sense.
Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Some of the background extras look like they’re just waiting for their lunch break to start. But does it matter? Not really. It’s got that specific, slightly gritty charm you don't see in modern stuff. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Pants, where you just wonder how they keep the momentum going without tripping over their own feet.
The ending isn't some big revelation. It just kind of… happens. It leaves you feeling like you just watched two friends stumble into a situation they were never going to survive. It’s not trying to change your life. It’s just trying to get a laugh, and honestly, that’s plenty. 🤷♂️
