5.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Secret Service remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you’re a die-hard fan of early talkies or have a weird obsession with Civil War dramas from the 30s. If you want something that moves fast, skip it. If you like watching actors recite lines like they’re still standing on a stage projecting to the back row, you might get a kick out of it.
It’s not bad, exactly. It’s just... very 1931.
Lewis Dumont is the classic spy-with-a-heart-of-gold trope. He’s supposed to be cold and calculating, but the second he sees the Southern girl, his whole plan goes out the window. It’s funny how these old films handle “tension.” It’s less about actual danger and more about people standing in rooms looking worried at each other for minutes at a time.
There’s this one scene where Dumont is trying to manipulate the situation, and he looks like he’s about to break into a sweat. Not from the war, but from the guilt. It’s a bit dramatic, maybe even a little silly.
The dialogue is so stiff you could use it as a ruler. It reminded me a bit of the pacing in Glorious Betsy, where everything feels like it’s being read from a manual. You can really tell this was adapted from a stage play. Everything happens in chunks. Someone enters a room, delivers a monologue, and exits. Rinse and repeat.
It’s not exactly The Unknown Soldier when it comes to the grit of war. It’s much more focused on the parlor drama. Sometimes it works, but mostly it just makes the stakes feel weirdly small.
There’s a part near the end where the conscience thing really kicks in. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this guy is the most tortured soul on the planet. It’s a bit much. I found myself checking my watch, which is never a great sign.
If you're looking for something light, maybe stick to something like Wife Savers instead. This one takes itself way too seriously to be much fun. But hey, if you want to see how they did suspense back then, have at it. Just don’t expect a masterpiece. 🎞️
