6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. She Couldn't Take It remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s screwball comedies that aren't afraid to get a little bit gritty, yeah, watch it. It’s perfect for a rainy afternoon when you don't want anything too heavy. If you get annoyed by people shouting over each other or rich folks acting like total nightmares, maybe skip it. It’s not for the prestige crowd.
Walter Connolly is the patriarch here, and honestly, watching him play a man so exhausted by his own family that he practically welcomes prison is a mood. He looks like he hasn't slept in a decade. When he meets George Raft’s character in the slammer, the chemistry is just... odd. It works, though. It’s the kind of pairing that shouldn't make sense, but it’s delightful.
Raft is playing the tough guy with a heart of gold, which is his bread and butter. He brings that specific street-smart energy that makes everyone else look like they’re playing dress-up in a ballroom. Seeing him try to manage a household of people who think 'work' is choosing a dress color is peak comedy. There’s a scene where he just stands there, totally unimpressed by some socialite’s meltdown, and it’s gold. Just absolute gold.
There's this one moment where the family is just screaming at each other, and the camera lingers on a tray of spilled drinks for way too long. It’s so specific and weird. It feels like the director just wanted to see if anyone would notice. Maybe it was a metaphor for the family's crumbling structure? Or maybe they just dropped the props. Either way, it’s funny.
It’s nowhere near as polished as Alibi Ike, which had that tight sports-movie rhythm. This one is looser, a bit shaggier. It feels like a movie made by people who knew they had a solid cast and decided to just let them run wild. Sometimes the script gets a bit lost, especially when the old gang shows up to cause trouble, but the banter carries it.
It’s not trying to solve the world's problems. It just wants to see a guy from the gutter put some manners into a bunch of people who own too many hats. 🎩 Honestly? Mission accomplished. Don't overthink it, just watch the chaos unfoldings.
