7.2/10

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Sky Parade remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Sky Parade today? Honestly, if you’re a fan of those breezy 1930s aviation B-movies, sure. It’s got that specific, snappy rhythm that makes it easy to digest on a Tuesday afternoon. If you’re looking for a serious war drama or anything with actual emotional stakes, you are probably going to hate it. It’s light, it’s loud, and it moves fast enough that you don't really have to think too hard about the plot holes.
The story is a classic programmer setup. We have two WWI buddies, played with that standard-issue cocky charm by Kent Taylor and William Gargan, who just want to get their high-tech plane off the ground. Naturally, there are spies lurking in the shadows. Why are there always spies hanging around hangars in these movies? It’s like they have a union.
There is a sequence about halfway through where they're working on the engine, and the camera lingers way too long on a pile of oily rags. I don't know why that stuck with me. Maybe it’s because the set design feels so incredibly hollow in those moments. It’s like the props department just shoved whatever they had into the corner.
The flight scenes are... well, they're exactly what you expect. A mix of stock footage and some shaky cockpit close-ups that make you wonder if the actors were actually having a good time or just holding their breath until the director yelled cut. It lacks the sheer personality of something like The Bluffer, but it gets the job done.
Kent Taylor spends a lot of the movie doing that thing where he smirks at danger. It’s endearing for about ten minutes, then it gets a little tiring. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this new plane is going to change the world. It’s just a prop, guys. Calm down.
If you're in the mood for something that doesn't require a single brain cell, you could do much worse. It’s a bit like watching Small Talk in terms of ambition—it knows exactly what it is and doesn't pretend to be high art. It’s just a bunch of guys in flight goggles running around. Sometimes, that’s enough. enough. ✈️
