5.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Skybound remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a massive soft spot for mid-30s B-movie fluff. It’s not going to change your life, but it moves fast enough that you won't be checking your watch every five minutes.
If you prefer your movies to have high stakes or, you know, actual logic, stay away. This one is for the folks who just want to see some vintage planes and guys in suits scowling at each other.
We’ve got Captain John Kent trying to keep the border safe, and then we’ve got Morley and Faber—the kind of bad guys who seem to spend more time plotting than actually making money. They decide the best way to get around the law is to corrupt the pilot's younger brother, Doug. Because why go through the trouble of actual smuggling when you can just cause a family feud instead?
The singer they bring in to distract the kid is supposed to be this big deal, but the chemistry is mostly just… *there*. It feels like they checked the box for 'romantic subplot' and moved on to the next scene.
I couldn't help but notice how much time they spend walking through doorways. Seriously, someone should count the entrances and exits. It’s almost like the director thought people moving from room to room was the peak of cinematic tension. 🚪
The dialogue is stiff. It’s the kind of writing where nobody says what they’re actually feeling, they just bark exposition at each other until the scene ends. I found myself thinking about Foolish Wives and how much more personality was packed into a single frame of that picture compared to this whole thing.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it doesn't try to be. It feels a bit like watching a cousin’s amateur home movie, just with better lighting and more formal shirts. There’s a scene where a character lingers at the door for way too long, looking pensive, and you just want to tell them to either leave or sit down.
It’s not quite as charming as Riders of Border Bay, but if you’ve run out of stuff to watch on a rainy Tuesday, it’ll do. Just don't expect it to stick in your brain for more than an hour after the credits roll. ✈️
