6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Speed Madness remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably already know if you’re the type of person who’s going to enjoy Speed Madness. If you love early talkies with that specific, tinny audio quality and plots about 'the big contract,' you’ll be fine. If you need modern pacing or characters who act like real human beings instead of plot devices, stay away. This isn't exactly high art, but it’s got a weird, frantic energy that kept me awake.
Bob Stuart is your classic 'rich guy looking for purpose' trope. He’s played with just enough charm to keep you from wishing the shipyard would just sink. The whole setup at the docks feels oddly claustrophobic, like the budget barely covered the paint for the boats.
There is a lot of talk about boat designs here. Like, a lot. I found myself zoning out during the engineering meetings, but then suddenly there's a guy running around like he’s in Loose Ankles, and things pick up again. The stunt work is surprisingly crunchy. It feels dangerous in a way that modern green-screen stuff never will.
I caught a glimpse of Walter Brennan in there. It’s always fun to see him before he became the grandfather of every western. He’s doing his thing, looking like he’s just happy to be on set and not currently sinking.
Why does every character in this movie stand at a 45-degree angle whenever they talk? It’s like they’re all trying to avoid a direct hit from a sniper. It makes the conversations feel like a weird dance. Or maybe they were just trying to find the microphone in the rafters. Who knows. 🚤
The pacing is all over the place. One minute we’re deep in a boardroom, the next we’re crashing through waves at what looks like a terrifying speed for the time. It lacks the polish of something like The Shop Girl, but that’s exactly why I didn’t get bored. You never know when someone is going to start shouting about a propeller blade.
It’s not a masterpiece. It barely manages to be a coherent story. But if you want to watch something that feels like it was put together in a garage on a Friday afternoon, this is your movie.
