4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Summertime remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Okay, so "Summertime" isn't exactly a deep dive. If you’re looking for complex plots or characters that make you think, you can skip this one. But for a quick hit of really old, simple animation? It’s a harmless little bit of fun, especially for kids or anyone with a soft spot for vintage cartoons. Otherwise, you might just find yourself shrugging. 🤷♀️
The whole thing is basically farmer Alfalfa just trying to get a drink. Like, really, really thirsty. Meanwhile, all the farm animals are just living their best life, splashing around, totally oblivious to his struggle. It sets up some very basic, very old-school gags.
You see plenty of animals doing their thing, but it’s that classic, exaggerated cartoon animal stuff. A frog does a little jig. Birds just chirp away, blissfully unaware. The animation itself? Exactly what you’d expect from way back when—a bit jumpy, kinda raw in spots, but it definitely has its own vibe. It really makes you pause and think about how far animation has come, even for super simple moves.
There’s this moment where Alfalfa tries pulling water from a well, and the rope just snaps. Of course it does! Then he tries the pond, and a fish splashes him right in the face. The humor isn't exactly cutting-edge, but you still feel a little sorry for his bad luck. The guy just cannot catch a break.
I kept wondering, did anyone ever actually let Alfalfa get his drink in these cartoons? Probably not, the poor soul. His ongoing thirst seems to be the whole point, honestly. The short feels like a gentle, repetitive tease of his growing frustration, always with cheerful animal antics happening nearby. A weird loop of quiet longing.
The ending just… ends. There’s no big payoff. Alfalfa’s probably still thirsty. The animals are still frolicking. It's almost refreshingly anti-climactic in its lack of a grand finale. Just a snapshot of a summer day, for whatever it’s worth. ☀️
It doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is. A quick, sunny glimpse into a world where a farmer's desperate thirst is the main event. If you enjoy really old cartoons for their history or just a simple chuckle at times gone by, give it a look. Otherwise, you won't be missing a thing.
