5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Taxi Barons remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you've got twenty minutes and a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white chaos, sure. It’s definitely not for anyone looking for a tight script or logical character decisions.
You will probably hate it if you need your movies to make sense or if you get annoyed by people shouting over each other in fake accents. It’s loud, it’s frantic, and it feels like it was put together on a dare.
The whole thing starts with a motorcycle getting absolutely totaled. I honestly didn't catch if the cop survived, but Ben and Billy were already running before the dust even settled. There’s no buildup here. Just straight into the panic.
The ship scene is where it gets weird. How exactly do you go from 'running from the law' to 'I am now a European baron' in ten minutes? The movie doesn't care. It just happens. It reminded me a bit of the sheer absurdity you find in The Fighting Kentuckians, though with way less scope and way more guys bumping into furniture.
Once they hit the party, the movie turns into a classic 'who can stay in character longer' routine. It’s not exactly high art. Watching them sweat under the pressure while trying to look sophisticated is the only real joke, and it repeats until it starts to feel like a loop.
There’s a moment where one of them tries to bow and nearly knocks over a waiter. It stayed on screen for maybe three seconds too long, which somehow made it funnier than it probably deserved to be. That’s the rhythm of this thing. It’s all about the near-misses.
I wouldn't compare this to something like Body and Soul in terms of quality. It doesn't have the soul or the grit. It’s just a snack. A quick, slightly burnt piece of toast.
By the time they get to the third act, you stop caring about the plot. You’re just watching to see how much more trouble they can get into before the credits roll. And honestly? That's fine. Not everything needs to be a masterpiece. 🚕💨
