Okay, so The Blimp Mystery with The Tiffany Talking Chimps. Yeah, you read that right. Is it worth watching today? If you're after something genuinely bizarre and a bit goofy for a quick laugh, absolutely. Otherwise, for anyone looking for a regular movie night, probably steer clear. It's a curiosity, pure and simple. 🐒
The plot, such as it is, involves a blimp and, well, a mystery. But really, it’s all about these chimps trying to unravel whatever’s going on. Their “talking” is... something else. You can almost see the trainer off-screen with the bananas or whatever reward they were using.
There’s this one scene where a chimp tries to “interview” a suspect. It just points wildly and chatters. The moment goes on about ten seconds too long, and you start to wonder if they just ran out of ideas for what the chimp should do next. It just kinda stares at the camera then.
The blimp itself feels almost secondary to the chimps, really. It’s just kinda floating there in the background, a prop more than a central character. It’s less about the blimp and more about the _idea_ of a blimp, you know?
The whole thing moves at this odd, stop-and-start pace. Like they had a few good ideas for chimp antics and then just stitched them together with some flimsy plot points. Some moments, they really try for actual suspense, but it just lands flat. It’s hard to be tense when a chimp is wearing a tiny detective hat. 🕵️♂️
I found myself laughing at it more than with it, which I think is probably the point? Or maybe not. Hard to tell with films this old and, frankly, this weird. The writer, Harry L. Fraser, he really went for it, huh?
You can tell they put a lot of effort into getting the chimps to do specific actions, even if the overall effect is kinda clunky. The chimps themselves are pretty charming, in their own way. They’re really trying their best.
It’s not a _good_ movie in any traditional sense. It’s not Ashes of Vengeance or anything like that. But it's memorable. You won't forget the talking chimps and their tiny clothes. For a dose of pure, unadulterated cinematic oddity, it does the trick. Just don't expect anything serious. Or even coherent.
