3.9/10

A definitive 3.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Boss Cowboy remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white horse operas where the sound mixing is as inconsistent as the plot logic. If you need tight pacing or character development that goes deeper than a puddle, steer clear. This is for the folks who want to feel like they are flipping through channels in 1955.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a weekend, which I kind of respect. The story is basically just a series of guys standing around in hats, pointing at things, and then riding off in the wrong direction. Watching Kerns try to act mysterious is a highlight, mostly because he’s about as subtle as a stampede.
I couldn't help but think about The Plowboy while watching this. They share that same weird, dusty DNA where the stakes feel high but nobody actually seems that worried. Like, the cattle are vanishing, but everyone is still making time for long, rambling conversations near a fence post.
There is this one moment where Taylor finds the poster—it’s supposed to be a big 'aha!' moment—but he stares at the paper for a full five seconds too long. It’s almost funny. You can see the gears turning in his head, or maybe he’s just trying to remember his lines. Either way, the silence is deafening. 🤠
The bad guys don’t really have a plan other than 'be mean.' It’s refreshing, in a way. No complex motives, no secret backstories, just pure, unadulterated villainy. It reminds me of the simple, chaotic energy in Box Car Blues. Sometimes you don’t need a reason to be a jerk; you just need a hat and a horse.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s definitely not boring if you just turn your brain off for an hour. Don't go in expecting The Fixer level of intensity. It’s just people being grumpy in the desert. And honestly, that’s enough for a Tuesday.
Wait, did that guy just fall off his horse in the background? Nobody reacts. They just keep talking about cattle rustling like it’s a Tuesday morning staff meeting. 🐎
