4.9/10

A definitive 4.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Fortunate Fool remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for weird, forgotten British stuff from the early days of sound, then The Fortunate Fool is probably worth a look. It’s not exactly high art, but it has this strange, jittery energy that I didn't hate. If you’re looking for a tight plot or logic, stay away. This movie is mostly just vibes and people shouting in rooms. 🎥
The whole premise feels like something a rich person would invent to feel 'grounded.' Our main author guy is so bored he treats a thief like a new puppy. It’s patronizing as hell, but somehow the movie doesn’t lean into that as much as you'd think. It mostly just lets the characters bounce off each other.
The dynamics are all over the place. One minute they’re having tea, the next someone is threatening to call the police. It’s got that specific pacing where scenes end five seconds before they should, or drag on until you’re staring at the wallpaper patterns in the background. Very distracting.
I kept thinking about The Silver Car while watching this. There’s a similar feeling of people trapped in situations they didn’t ask for, though this one is a lot less polished. It’s a bit rough around the edges, like a sweater that’s been washed too many times.
It’s not a masterpiece. It doesn’t even try to be. Sometimes it feels like the director just let the cameras roll and hoped for the best. Is that a bad thing? Not always. It makes the whole thing feel human, if a bit sleepy at times.
I think I liked the thief character more than I was supposed to. He’s the only one not pretending to be sophisticated, which makes him the only person who actually feels real. Everyone else is busy acting like they’re in a much more important play.
Anyway, watch it if you’re tired of modern stuff that’s too clean. It’s messy, it’s short, and it probably won't change your life. But you'll definitely remember that weird bookshelf stare. 🧐
