5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Golden Taiga remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a thing for vintage Soviet-era cinematography or really, really enjoy shots of pine trees. If you’re looking for a tight, punchy thriller, keep walking. This is for the patient crowd who doesn't mind if a movie stops to admire a river for five minutes.
It’s definitely not for anyone who needs constant dialogue to feel like a plot is happening. It’s quiet. Very quiet. Sometimes, I forgot people were even on screen because they were just blending into the landscape.
The whole thing feels like an expedition that lost its map. The camera work has this charmingly unpolished feel to it, like they were filming during a real hike and just decided to record whatever happened. There’s a specific scene where they’re crossing a log bridge, and you can see the actor’s boots slipping just a little bit. It wasn't scripted, I’m sure, but it made me hold my breath way more than any of the 'dramatic' moments.
The acting is… well, it’s earnest. N. Golubin looks like he’s actually spent a week eating nothing but cold porridge in a tent. That’s a compliment, by the way. He’s not doing any of that theatrical posturing you see in stuff like A Modern Musketeer.
There’s a moment near the middle where they sit around a fire and literally just talk about geology for an eternity. It’s boring. But it’s also weirdly comforting. It feels like a real conversation, not some writer trying to force exposition down my throat.
Is it better than the high-energy stuff like The Return of Bulldog Drummond? Probably not if you want to be entertained. But it has a soul, even if that soul is mostly just dirt and freezing cold wind.
I left the movie feeling like I needed a heavy coat and a hot cup of tea. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a decent little time capsule. Just don't expect a big payoff at the end of the treasure hunt. It’s the journey, or whatever. ☕
