5.8/10

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Hunter of Fall remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch The Hunter of Fall today? Only if you have a real soft spot for old black-and-white dramas where everyone wears sturdy boots and stares intensely at the horizon. If you want something snappy or modern, you are going to be bored out of your mind within ten minutes. This is for the folks who like their cinema to feel like a dusty book pulled off a library shelf.
The whole thing centers on a girl in the mountains who has a baby without being married. In this village, that’s basically a death sentence for your social life. The way the other villagers look at her—like she’s a bug under a magnifying glass—is actually pretty chilling. It’s not subtle, but it works.
Then there is the forest ranger. He’s the strong, silent type, obviously. He spends a lot of time walking through trees and looking like he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. When he decides to go after the guy who wronged the girl, it doesn’t feel like an action scene. It feels like a chore he’s been dreading.
There’s a moment where the ranger is just sitting by a stream, sharpening a blade. It goes on for about thirty seconds too long, and honestly? I kind of liked it. It gave me a second to actually think about the cold air they must be breathing.
Comparing this to something like The Waif, you can see how much these older films rely on pure, raw atmosphere. There isn't any fancy editing to hide the gaps in the story. You just get the mountain and the mess of human feelings.
The climax is… well, it’s not really a climax. It’s more of a quiet settling of accounts. If you were hoping for a big, epic showdown with music swelling in the background, you’re in for a disappointment. The movie doesn’t seem interested in being a thriller. It just wants to show you how a bad situation ends in a place where gossip is the main currency.
Is it perfect? No way. The pacing is a total disaster if you’re looking for a plot that moves. But sometimes, watching people walk through the woods while the world judges them is enough. It’s a bit messy, a bit grim, and definitely not for everyone. 🏔️
I left the screen feeling like I needed a warm drink and a nap. It’s that kind of movie. Not profound, just heavy.
