5.8/10

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Old Grey Mayor remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school, snappy banter and don't mind a story that feels like it’s constantly sprinting to catch its own tail, sure. Give it a go. But if you’re looking for something with a deep, layered plot, you’ll probably find this thing annoying. It’s loud, it’s frantic, and it doesn't give you a second to breathe.
There's this vibe to The Old Grey Mayor that feels like a rehearsal that never ended. You can see the gears turning. Bob Hope is just doing his thing, being the guy who can't get a word in edgewise, and honestly? It works for the most part. It reminded me a bit of the manic energy in Chumps and Cops, where the pacing is basically 'don't stop or you'll die.'
The Mayor is having an absolute nightmare of a day. People are shouting, papers are flying everywhere, and the poor guy looks like he’s about to have a stroke every time the door opens. It’s almost stressful to watch, in a weird way. I felt bad for the guy, even if he is just a character in a 1930s short.
The whole engagement news thing barely happens. Every time they try to open their mouths, some new disaster happens in the office. A phone rings, a window breaks, or some aide runs in with bad news. It’s classic stuff, maybe a little predictable, but it moves so fast you don't really care.
I found myself thinking about Money while watching this, mainly because both films treat their central conflict like a hot potato. Nobody wants the truth out. Everyone is just running around in circles. It’s not profound, but it’s funny if you’re in the right mood.
There is this moment where Hope tries to lean on the desk and it clearly wobbles. Nobody fixed it. It stays in the final cut. That’s the kind of thing that makes me love these older, smaller movies. It feels lived-in, even if it's just a set.
Don't look for a grand ending. It just sort of stops. It’s like they ran out of film or the Mayor just finally had enough and threw them all out. It’s abrupt, messy, and totally fits the tone of the rest of the movie. 🎥
