5.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Old Pioneer remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for vintage animation, sure, give it a look. If you get annoyed by cartoons where every single movement is synced to a chirpy, repeating musical score, you’re gonna hate this one. It’s barely seven minutes long, so you won't lose much of your life even if you loathe it.
The whole setup is just an excuse to get us into the flashback. An old timer grabs a kid, starts talking, and suddenly we're in the desert. Classic storytelling frame, but honestly? It feels like they just wanted to get to the dance numbers as fast as possible.
The animation is bouncy. Sometimes it’s a little too bouncy, where everyone is jittering around like they’ve had too much coffee. You can tell they were trying to mimic those Disney Silly Symphonies, but it feels a bit more... frantic. Less soul, more hustle.
The Native American caricatures are definitely a product of their time. They’re pretty uncomfortable to look at now, even by 1930s standards. They just sort of bounce in unison while things explode into shapes. It’s weirdly hypnotic, but also feels like someone trying to fill space.
There's this one bit with a bear that goes on way too long. The bear is just shuffling. It’s just shuffling for what feels like a solid minute. I found myself staring at the background textures instead, which were actually kind of charming in their flat, painted way.
If you like this sort of thing, it’s not miles away from stuff like Wonders of the Sea in terms of how it tries to build a little world, but without the actual substance. It’s more of a visual exercise than a narrative one.
It’s not trying to change the world. It’s just a cartoon. Sometimes I forget that these things were made as filler for movie houses, just to keep the audience occupied before the main event. You can really feel that lack of ambition here.
It isn't a masterpiece, but it’s a curiosity. A strange, jittery, dusty, musical curiosity. 🤠
