6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Ruling Voice remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into old-school gangster flicks where everyone talks like they’re reading from a telegraph, you’ll probably find something to love here. It’s a bit creaky, honestly. If you need your movies to be fast and slick, this one is going to feel like it’s wading through mud. Walter Huston is the main reason to show up; he’s got that voice that makes even the most tired lines sound like they actually matter.
The whole premise is that our lead mobster wants to keep his hands clean for his daughter’s sake. It’s a classic setup, maybe even a little cliché, but Huston sells the conflict in his eyes. There’s a specific scene where he’s staring out a window, and you can just feel the weight of all those bad choices piling up behind him. It’s quiet, and it’s effective.
The supporting cast is… well, it’s a lot. Loretta Young is in there, doing her best, but sometimes the chemistry feels like two people who just met in the hallway before the camera started rolling. 🎥
It reminds me a bit of the heavy-handed moralizing in The Grim Comedian, though maybe a little less focused. There’s this attempt to make the underworld look dangerous, but sometimes it just looks like a bunch of guys in suits having a very intense meeting in a basement.
The movie really drags its feet when it comes to the daughter’s storyline. It’s supposed to be the emotional anchor, but it feels more like an anchor dragging the whole ship down. I found myself wishing the film would just get back to the extortion stuff, which is way more interesting than the oh-my-dear-child dialogue.
Still, you can’t deny that Huston commands the screen. When he’s angry, the whole room seems to tilt. It’s not the greatest film of the era—not by a long shot—but it’s got a weird, dusty charm that you just don't get in modern blockbusters. It’s imperfect, a bit messy, and clearly trying to be something bigger than it is. Sometimes that’s enough. 🎞️
