4/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Shadow of Silk Lennox remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you are expecting a polished masterpiece, you are in the wrong place. The Shadow of Silk Lennox is the kind of movie that feels like it was cobbled together in a single afternoon. If you enjoy classic crime tropes and don’t mind a script that feels like it’s being held together by duct tape, you might dig it. If you need logic or, you know, decent pacing, you’ll probably want to skip this one entirely.
The whole thing centers on Lennox, who is supposedly going straight but spends most of his time looking over his shoulder. It’s pretty obvious he’s lying to himself. There’s this one scene where a henchman tries to skip town with a bag of cash, and the tension is… well, it’s not exactly Hitchcock. It’s more like a staged wrestling match that got a bit too violent.
Lon Chaney Jr. is in here, obviously. He brings that specific brand of grit that makes you feel like you need a shower after the scene ends. He’s the best part of the movie, honestly. Everyone else feels like they are just waiting for the craft services table to open up.
I couldn't help but compare it to other stuff from that era. It doesn't have the punch of A Fight for Love, and it certainly lacks the strange, weird energy you get in The Temple of Venus. It just sort of… exists.
There is a moment near the end where a character is meant to look shocked, but he mostly just looks like he forgot his lines. I rewound it twice just to be sure. It’s genuinely funny in a way I don't think the director intended. 🤨
Is it a classic? Not by a long shot. But there’s something honest about how messy it is. It doesn't try to be high art, and thank goodness for that. It just wants to show you a guy being a jerk in a suit, and it does exactly that.
If you have an hour to kill and a high tolerance for bad acting, give it a shot. Otherwise, maybe just watch Scrappily Married instead for something a bit less gloomy.
