4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Vanishing Riders remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white westerns where the plot makes exactly as much sense as a fever dream, sure. It’s perfect for a rainy afternoon when you don't want to think too hard. If you need grit or high-stakes drama, you’re going to hate every single second of this.
The whole premise of The Vanishing Riders is just wild. We start with Sheriff Bill Jones killing an outlaw and immediately adopting his kid, Tim. It’s the kind of 1930s screenwriting where trauma just doesn't exist. They move on to a silver town that’s supposed to be haunted, but mostly it’s just empty and dusty.
The real highlight is the climax. I’m not joking when I say the sheriff and the kid start wearing skeleton sheets to scare off the bad guys. They even put these weird skeleton blankets on their horses. It’s absurd. It’s like watching a home-movie prank gone way too far. The gang members, who are supposed to be tough, are apparently terrified of bedsheets.
The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it feels like nothing happens for ten minutes, then suddenly there’s a gunfight. It’s not quite as weird as The Horror, but it shares that same low-budget charm. It’s just people riding horses and talking in front of rocks.
I couldn't help but think about how much effort they put into the ghost makeup. Someone had to actually paint those skulls on the horses. That’s a level of commitment you just don't see in modern films anymore. It’s almost sweet.
It’s not a masterpiece. It barely qualifies as a coherent story. But it has this weird, earnest energy that makes it hard to look away. If you liked the oddball energy of A Prohibition Monkey, you might get a kick out of this one too. Just don't go in expecting The Searchers.
Also, does anyone ever actually talk like this in real life? Everyone is so polite while they are robbing each other blind. It’s very funny if you think about it too much. 👻🐎
