7.2/10

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. They Won't Forget remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that leave a bad taste in your mouth—in a good way—then absolutely. It’s not a fun watch. If you’re looking for a cozy mystery or something with a tidy moral victory, stay away. This one is for people who want to see how quickly a town can turn into a pack of wolves.
There’s this scene early on involving a train station that is just bone-chilling. You see the machinery of the mob start to turn, and it’s not loud. It’s just inevitable. It reminded me a bit of the suffocating tension in The Unknown Soldier, where the environment itself feels like it’s closing in on the protagonist.
Claude Rains is in this, and he’s doing that thing where he looks like he knows exactly how doomed everyone is. He plays the D.A. who sees a political ladder where everyone else sees a tragedy. He doesn’t scream or shout much. He just waits for the public to get angry enough to do his work for him.
It’s honestly refreshing to see a film from the 30s that isn't trying to sell you on the inherent goodness of humanity. It’s cynical. Really cynical. It makes some of the lighter fare from the era, like Get Your Man, feel like they’re from another planet entirely.
The pacing is… well, it’s not fast. Sometimes the dialogue hangs in the air for a second too long, but it works. It forces you to sit with the discomfort. It’s not like Anna Christie where you’re waiting for the big monologue. Here, you’re waiting for the axe to fall.
The ending isn't a cliffhanger. It’s a shrug. It’s the kind of ending that makes you want to walk outside and breathe some fresh air because you feel like you’ve been holding your breath for two hours. It doesn't give you closure, and I think that’s why it actually stays with you. Some movies try so hard to explain their point that they ruin it. This one just shows you the mess and walks away.
Maybe don't watch this right before bed. It’s not scary in the jump-scare way, but it’s definitely the kind of thing that makes you look at people differently. A real downer, but a damn good one.
