5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Three Who Loved remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Probably not, unless you’re really into early talkie dramas that feel like they were filmed in a drafty basement. If you like your movies to have high stakes but low energy, you’ll be fine. If you want something that actually moves, you'll probably hate it.
The whole thing hinges on a guy getting framed. You know the drill. A bank teller loses his life to a mistake he didn't even make. It’s a classic setup that just kind of... hangs there.
There's a scene near the middle where a character is holding a cup of coffee, and I swear he holds it for three minutes without taking a single sip. It’s distracting. Why keep the cup if you aren't gonna drink the coffee? ☕️
Also, the lighting in the office scenes is bizarre. Everyone looks like they’re being haunted by their own shadows. It feels a bit like The Scar of Shame but without the same kind of punchy intensity.
It’s not as miserable as Corruption, but it’s definitely not a barrel of laughs either. It just sort of exists. It’s a movie that doesn't really want to be bothered.
There are moments where you can see the seams. The sets feel like paper. You can almost hear the director whispering, "Just look worried and keep walking." It’s kinda charming in a broken sort of way.
Don't get me wrong, I like the old stuff. But this one feels like it was left on the shelf for a reason. Maybe skip it unless you're doing some sort of marathon. I found myself looking at the texture of the wallpaper behind the main character more than listening to his monologue about justice. 🤷♂️
