7.1/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Thunder Over Mexico remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you either love this kind of thing or you’re going to be bored to tears within ten minutes. If you enjoy movies that feel like a dusty, half-remembered dream, you’ll dig it. If you’re the type of person who needs a three-act structure and characters who talk instead of just brooding, look elsewhere.
This is Eisenstein, so of course it looks stunning. Like, stop-and-stare-at-the-screen kind of stunning. The way the light hits those faces? It’s not just a movie; it’s a collection of portraits that happen to move sometimes.
You can tell it isn't finished. There are these huge jumps where you feel like you missed a whole reel, or maybe just a thought. It’s like reading a book where someone ripped out every other page but the writing left behind is so good you don't even care.
The story itself is heavy, obviously. It’s about a guy trying to save his girl from a master who thinks he owns everything, including the people. It’s brutal, but there’s a weird, quiet grace to how it’s filmed. It feels a bit like The Strike Breaker in terms of that raw, working-class tension, but with way more shadows.
It reminds me a little of Der Richter von Zalamea, where you have these rigid social structures crushing people under their heels. Except here, the landscape is almost another character, looming over them.
Sometimes, the silence in this movie is louder than any dialogue. There’s a scene near the middle that feels like it goes on forever, just a guy staring at the horizon, and I found myself holding my breath. It’s imperfect, yeah. Totally disjointed. But there’s a soul in there that you just don't get in modern, over-polished stuff. 📽️
It’s definitely not for everyone. You gotta have patience. But if you’re tired of movies that explain every single emotion to you, this might be exactly what you need to cleanse your palate. It just is, and that's enough.
