6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Tim Tyler's Luck remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white serials where people shout directions at each other in the jungle, you’ll probably get a kick out of this. It’s definitely not for folks who need a coherent plot or, you know, high production values. If you prefer something like The Love Bug for your vintage fix, maybe skip this one. It's a bit rough around the edges.
Tim Tyler's Luck is mostly just a guy running around trying not to get shot or eaten. It feels like someone took a bunch of leftover props from other movies and just threw them into the African wilderness.
There’s this moment where Tim is just walking through the brush, and the background looks so much like a painted curtain I actually laughed out loud. You can almost see the wrinkles in the sky. It’s fantastic.
The bad guys here are cartoonishly mean. They don't just rob people; they stand around looking suspicious while waiting for the hero to trip over a vine. It’s not exactly high-stakes tension, but it’s got a weird rhythm that kept me watching.
Speaking of the animals, some of the stock footage is glued in so poorly you’d think they were playing a game of 'spot the difference.' One second a lion is there, the next it’s gone, and nobody seems to care that a predator was just hanging out by the craft services table.
The whole thing feels a bit like Sundown Saunders but with more mosquitoes. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece, and honestly, that’s where it finds its footing. It’s just trying to get from one cliffhanger to the next without the whole thing collapsing.
I found myself wondering if Tim actually likes his dad or if he’s just doing this because the script said so. He seems more concerned with dodging rocks than reuniting with his family. It’s an oddly cold approach to an adventure story.
Anyway, don't overthink it. Grab a snack, turn off the lights, and just accept that nothing here makes sense. It’s not meant to be analyzed, just watched until you fall asleep or get annoyed by the bad sound mixing. 🦁
