A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Tough Guy remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for a Sunday afternoon watch that won't make your brain hurt, Tough Guy is probably worth a spin. It’s one of those movies that’s pure melodrama, but the kind that actually works if you’re in the right mood. You’ll dig it if you like old-school character studies, but if you need high-octane thrills or complex twists, you’re gonna have a bad time.
The whole thing kicks off with a kid who has just had enough. He packs a bag, calls his dog, and leaves. Simple, right? It’s the kind of premise that could have gone full-on cutesy disaster, but there’s a grit to it that keeps you watching.
Then Joseph Calleia shows up. He’s the gangster, and he is fantastic. There’s a scene near the middle where he’s trying to figure out how to handle a kid who won’t stop following him. You can see the gears turning in his head. He’s trying to be a tough guy, but the kid is slowly ruining his reputation.
It reminds me a bit of the unexpected bonds in Viva Villa!, where the chaos of the world forces two very different people to lean on each other. It’s not exactly the same, but the vibe is there. Just two guys—one big, one small—trying to exist in a world that doesn't really want them.
There’s this moment where they’re hiding out in a barn, and the silence is just heavy. Most movies would have put a big, swelling orchestral score over it to tell you how to feel. This one? It just lets the dog sniff around. It’s refreshingly quiet.
Is the ending a bit much? Sure. It’s manipulative. You know it’s coming, and you know you’re being played, but you don't even care. Sometimes you just want to see a criminal find a heart, even if it’s a bit of a stretch.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s barely even a "great" film by most standards. But it’s got heart, and honestly, that’s more than I can say for most things I watch these days. If you find yourself scrolling through lists, give this one a look. Just don't expect it to change your life. 🐕
