6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Tout pour rien remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Is Tout pour rien worth watching today? Hmm. For most folks, probably not a weekend must-see. But if you’re into older French cinema, or just want something gentle with a dash of classic mischief, you might find a quiet charm here. Anyone expecting big thrills or modern pacing will probably be pretty bored. 😴
The whole thing centers around this young fella, our hero, who is just so incredibly honest. It’s almost painful to watch sometimes. He’s got this wide-eyed innocence that makes him an easy target.
And boy, do the crooks target him. They’re not exactly masterminds, mind you. More like a gang of slightly bumbling opportunists who see an easy mark. They use his good name, his clean record, for their own little schemes.
One scene sticks with me. Our hero is signing some papers, looking utterly clueless. You can almost feel the movie _trying_ to convince you how pure he is. It’s a bit on-the-nose, but in a sweet, old-fashioned way.
The pacing, as you’d guess for a film from this era, is… deliberate. There are moments where you just watch people walk, or sit, for what feels like a long time. It gives you a chance to think about what they had for lunch, maybe. 🥪
Monique Joyce plays the love interest. She has this very classic, almost ethereal presence. Their romance is less about sparks and more about gentle glances. It feels very proper, very much of its time.
The manipulation part of the plot, it’s not really tense. You never truly fear for our hero. It’s more like watching a kitten try to escape a very slow, slightly confused dog. You know it’ll be fine.
André Alerme, as one of the crooks, has this wonderful, slightly exasperated look on his face most of the time. Like he can’t quite believe how easy this young guy is to fool. He doesn't need to say much, his face tells a story. 😂
There's a moment where a character tries to explain something complicated, and the hero just nods, completely missing the point. It’s not a big laugh, but a little chuckle. It feels very real, that kind of cluelessness.
The movie really leans into the idea that honesty, eventually, pays off. It's a nice sentiment, perhaps a bit idealistic for today. But it works here, in this particular world.
The ending, without giving anything away, wraps things up very neatly. Maybe a little too neat. But after watching our hero stumble through everything, you kinda want him to get his happy ending, you know?
It’s not a film that will change your life. It’s not even a film you’ll probably remember every detail of a week later. But it has this gentle charm. Like a forgotten tune you hum for a bit.
I did notice a few things:
The Weaker Sex or Gosse de riche, films from similar times, might offer a bit more drama, but Tout pour rien holds its own as a simple, good-hearted story. It’s definitely not Die Herrin der Welt 2. Teil - Die Geschichte der Maud Gregaards if you’re looking for high adventure.
