6.7/10

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Turn Back the Clock remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
So, is Turn Back the Clock actually worth watching today? Absolutely, especially if you love weird, fast-talking movies from the early thirties that don't take themselves too seriously. 🚂
If you hate frantic acting and characters who yell half their lines, you will probably want to skip this one. But for everyone else, it is a blast.
The story is basically a "what if" scenario about a guy named Joe who runs a dusty little cigar shop. He is played by Lee Tracy, who always looks like he just drank five cups of black coffee. ☕
Joe is miserable because his old friend got filthy rich by marrying a wealthy woman named Elvina. Naturally, Joe wishes he had married her instead when he had the chance.
Then he gets run over by a car. 💥
Instead of dying, he wakes up twenty years in the past but keeps his modern brain. It is like Back to the Future but with more pinstripe suits and weirdly specific financial tips about buying real estate.
It is way more energetic than some of the stuffy, boring dramas from that exact same era, like Common Clay.
There is this one incredibly random scene where the Three Stooges just show up. They are not even credited as the Stooges, they are just background singers in a hallway. 🎤
I literally gasped when I saw Curly's face pop up. It is the kind of bizarre, accidental detail that makes digging through old movies so rewarding.
Also, the sound design is incredibly messy. In one scene, the background crowd noise just cuts out completely for a second, like someone accidentally pulled a plug in the studio.
You might know Mae Clarke as the poor girl who got a grapefruit shoved in her face by James Cagney in another movie. Here, she gets to show some real emotion, and her quiet, sad looks really anchor the chaotic plot.
The ending happens so fast you might blink and miss it. It is like the writers realized they only had two minutes of film left in the camera and rushed to wrap everything up.
It is not a masterpiece, but it is a super fun watch if you want to see how people in 1933 imagined time travel. Just do not expect any fancy special effects. 🎬
