6.7/10

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Unknown Valley remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you love old-school desert westerns. If you’re a fan of Buck Jones or just like seeing guys in hats wander through canyons for an hour, you'll have a blast. If you need a movie that moves fast and doesn't get bogged down in folks just sitting around talking about 'Elders,' you might find yourself checking your watch.
It’s not exactly The One Way Trail in terms of punchiness, but it has that weird, dusty charm.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed during the hottest week of the year. You can almost taste the sand in the back of your throat. There’s a scene where Joe finds the village, and it’s just so quiet. Like, unnervingly quiet. It makes you wonder if anyone actually lives there or if the set decorator just forgot to add props.
Buck Jones is doing his best, but he looks like he’s squinting against the sun for about 90% of his screen time. I don’t blame him. I’d be squinting too.
The plot about the dad being a prisoner is fine, I guess. It’s mostly an excuse to get Joe from point A to point B. It feels a lot like A Game with Fate where things just sort of happen to the hero because the script said so. You aren't watching for the deep logic here.
The dialogue is stiff. Like, really stiff. But sometimes that’s exactly what you want on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It’s a movie that feels like it’s trying to be a bit more serious than it actually is. That’s where the fun is, right?
One of the guards has this mustache that is honestly a distraction. I spent way too much time looking at it during a supposedly tense standoff. Sometimes the movie feels like it’s falling apart at the seams, but then the camera pans over a nice wide shot of the valley and you’re like, 'Okay, I’m back in.'
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even trying to be. It’s just a movie about a guy in a desert. Sometimes that’s enough. 🌵
