Biography

Born in the heart of New York City on November 2, 1892, Alice Brady inherited a deep connection to the performing arts; her father was the famed Broadway impresario William A. Brady. From her earliest years, the allure of the stage captivated her. After making a name for herself in several theatrical productions, Brady's talent caught the eye of burgeoning movie producers in New York, then the undeniable capital of the film industry. She made her cinematic debut at the age of 22, starring in *As Ye Sow* (1914), and was immediately propelled into a remarkably prolific career. While 1915 saw her in three films, her output skyrocketed to nine productions the following year, a testament to her undeniable appeal. Brady was among the fortunate and versatile few who seamlessly transitioned from the silent screen to the new era of sound. Her compelling portrayal in *My Man Godfrey* (1936) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1936. Demonstrating her continued excellence, she clinched the coveted Oscar in the same category just two years later, for her truly tremendous performance in *In Old Chicago* (1938). Tragically, her vibrant career was cut short when she succumbed to cancer in New York City on October 28, 1939, at the young age of 46. Her final, memorable appearance that year was in *Young Mr. Lincoln* (1939).
