Biography
London fog greeted Brandon Hurst on 30 November 1866, and by the 1920s Hollywood lights were flickering across his gaunt, expressive face. Between those two coasts he carved a niche as cinema’s gentleman-menace: stalking John Barrymore through the fog in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), snarling at Lon Chaney’s Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), and tangling with Greta Garbo’s tempestuous Anna in Love (1927). The curtain fell on 15 July 1947 in Hollywood, California, but the chill he left on-screen lingers.
