"Carl Stockdale, a devoted friend of Charlotte Shelby, mother to the luminous starlet Mary Miles Minter, stepped onto the witness stand to provide a pivotal alibi. He testified that he was in Mrs. Shelby's presence at the exact time director William Desmond Taylor—Minter's clandestine lover—was murdered, aiming to unequivocally clear Charlotte of the heinous crime. Stockdale's own suspicions, however, were directed at Taylor's former chauffeur, a man known as Sands, whom he believed to be the true perpetrator.
