In the quaint Connecticut countryside, Amos Kerran and his wife reside, encapsulated in a traditional, old-fashioned lifestyle, juxtaposed with the cosmopolitan successes of their children, Arthur and Maybelle, in New York society. The siblings' desire to invite their parents to the city at Christmastime is hindered by their apprehension regarding the unrefined appearance of the older Kerrans. Louise, Arthur's fashionable sweetheart, intervenes by visiting the Kerrans, gaining their trust, and subsequently enrolling them in a finishing school. This pivotal decision culminates in the Kerrans' triumphant New York debut, as they navigate the complexities of high society with newfound poise and elegance.
