Biography
Edward Peil Sr. entered the world on a winter’s day in Racine, Wisconsin—January 18, 1883—and spent the next seven-and-a-half decades turning that Midwestern calm into a silver-screen career. From D. W. Griffith’s fragile London alleys in Broken Blossoms (1919) to the circus thrills of The Big Cage (1933), and the brush-stroke romanticism of The Dragon Painter (1919), he slipped into dozens of characters while audiences watched shadows dance on theater walls. Off-camera he shared his life with Henrietta “Etta” Raynor, his steadfast partner through every studio contract and silent-era sunset. The final curtain fell on December 29, 1958, in Hollywood, California, closing the arc of a journeyman actor who had seen the flicker of kerosene-lit sets give way to the glare of technicolor dreams.
