A Savannah breeze on May 27, 1890, delivered Florence Brunet, the girl who would slip into Hollywood as Fritzi Brunette. Twenty-three years later she stepped before a camera for the first time, trading Georgia quiet for the flicker of 1913’s ANNIE LAURIE and THE APPEAL. Silent reels soon knew her face; talkies later learned her voice. By the mid-’30s she had drifted into the anonymous corners of the screen—watch Clark Gable and Jeanette MacDonald survive the earthquake in SAN FRANCISCO and you’ll spot her, uncredited yet unmistakably present.
