Biography
The fog that rolled over San Francisco in 1880 parted long enough for Jack Curtis to take his first breath, heir to a surname already stitched into ledgers and law books—his father Chris counted coins downtown, his uncle William argued cases back east. In 1904 Jack boarded a steamer bound for Hong Kong, found the Atlantic no match for Lil’s quick wit, and married her before the voyage ended; together they zig-zagged the vaudeville circuit, trading punchlines for applause from coast to coast. A decade later, on 7 April 1914, the act gained a new voice: daughter Laura Ann, who would trade the spotlight for the name Hurst in 1935. Jack stepped in front of a movie camera in 1915 and didn’t step away until 1951, when a stroke closed the curtain on his screen life. Between those years he sired stories, grandchildren, and legends—all delivered in the same velvet tone that once hushed rowdy variety houses.
