Biography
Tom Kennedy traded the boxing ring for the flicker of silent-film footlights in the early 1910s, turning a battered nose and slab-of-granite frame into comic gold. Audiences came to love him as the slow-witted but soft-hearted lug—none more memorable than his hulking detective in The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (1937). Over the next four decades he popped up beside W.C. Fields’s sly con-men, matched deadpan stares with Groucho and Harpo, and played straight man to Laurel & Hardy’s chaos, working steadily until the curtain fell on his 80th birthday.
