David gets into a fight with the owner of Strongheart, a German Shepherd. Believing the has accidentally killed the man, David takes Strongheart and flees to northern Canada. He arrives at a small settlement and gets a job with the local trading post, and falls in love with Sally, the owner's daughter. When it comes time for Strongheart to find a mate he leaves the settlement, and soon returns with "The Fawn". However, during the time he was gone David has come down with pneumonia and is deathly ill. Complications ensue.

Margaret Manning, a poor waif who lost her mother early in her childhood and was deserted by her machine-politician father Jim Connelly is raised by the Finns, a poor family who sends her to work in the factory. However, when Connelly finally admits that he is beaten and praises his daughter's tenacity, Jack's faith is restored, and the bill is passed to the benefit of thousands of factory workers.

Persuade by a letter from her Aunt Agnes in America, Kitty McCarthy ( Olive Thomas ) travels from Ireland to New York City, there she meets Gordon Davis, a successful playwright, who directs her to her aunt's address on the East Side. Kitty soon discovers her aunt living in a tenement, a confirmed alcoholic. Through her niece's care, Agnes is cured, and one day Davis appears and offers Kitty a part in a comedy that he has written. She accepts, and once backstage meets Vera Maxwell, the victim of an unhappy affair with Oscar Savoy. Kitty brings the lovelorn couple back together but is unsuccessful in arranging her own romance with Davis' nephew Roger until Davis finally intervenes, and a happy ending prevails for all.

Georgina asks permission from her old aunt, Patricia Mercer Vanderpyl, to marry Capt. Nugent before his departure for France. Patricia refuses and, in reply to Georgina's questioning, gives her a diary from her own girlhood to read. The diary unfolds the story of Patricia's marriage to soldier Anthony Vanderpyl. Returning on furlough after the outbreak of the Civil War, Anthony suddenly leaves Patricia to visit Mrs. Le Roy, an old flame, and is killed by her jealous husband. Positive that Anthony had been unfaithful to her, Patricia refuses to open the letter that her husband sent her on the day of his death. Georgina now opens it and discovers that Anthony had gone to Mrs. Le Roy to end the affair that his brother Bentley was having with her. With this revelation, Patricia sanctions her niece's marriage, then dies, joining Anthony in "the spreading dawn".
