Under flickering kerosene he grafts a new past onto her—one in which fidelity is not a dagger but a covenant—yet each suture whispers the name of the slain lover. On the night the moon drips like molten pewter, she awakens clear-eyed, speaking in a child’s cadence, and the doctor—sallow, triumphant—believes he has cheated Hades.
