Summary
A lupine-sheened malamute mongrel—half domestic hearth, half primordial howl—named Flash is yanked from the warm orbit of telegraph lineman Clark Moran and hurled into a kangaroo court of jittery ranchers whose ewes lie eviscerated at dawn. The jury of sweat-stained hats needs no more evidence than the dog’s amber glare; the sentence is rope and gravity. Flash snaps the tether, bolts past the last fence, and ascends into a cathedral of granite and pine where the wind carries verdicts of its own. There he meets a wild she-wolf, moonlit, skeptical, willing to teach him the grammar of survival. Their idyll is shredded when a ransom note arrives: Betty, Clark’s betrothed, has been bagged by Luther Nash, the actual ovicide opportunist who has weaponized rumor to clear the valley of predators and rivals alike. Flash abandons the high-country Eden, plummets back toward human duplicity, and navigates a gauntlet of leghold traps, rifle scopes, and a posse that would rather shoot first than decipher paw prints. In a final nocturnal showdown inside an abandoned silver mine, fang tears flesh, lantern oil ignites, and the echo of a single gunshot decides whether loyalty or larceny will inherit the range at sunrise.
Synopsis
When Flash's master, Clark Moran, goes out of town on business, Flash, who is part wolf, is falsely accused of sheepicide and sentenced to death by local ranchers. Escaping into the mountains, Flash finds a mate but has to leave his new companion to rescue his master's love, Betty, who has been kidnapped by the real sheep killer, Luther Nash.
