Biography
Rio de Janeiro, 12 September 1893: Luiz de Barros enters the world just as the city’s boulevards are learning to flicker with electric light. By 1916 he is already bending strips of nitrate into suspense, cutting *Vivo ou Morto*—one of Brazil’s earliest cliff-hangers—frame by frame. Seven years later he unleashes *Cavaleiro Negro*, a shadow-drenched duel that gallops through projectors like a rumor. In 1931 he greets the talkie dawn with *Alvorada da Glória*, letting sound and image waltz together for the first time under his steady hand. Off-set, he shares his life with Gita de Barros, his collaborator and anchor. Nearly nine decades after his birth, the city that raised him draws him back: Luiz closes his final reel in 1982, leaving behind a legacy spliced into the very fabric of Brazilian cinema.
