Carlow, Ireland, delivered him to the world; America claimed him around 1890. Before the flicker of film ever caught his eye, he had already worn half a dozen lives—anticipating curtain calls on provincial stages, surveying mountain passes as an engineer, bargaining over centuries-old furniture, and standing knee-deep in icy streams hunting color in the gravel. When movies finally spoke his language, he stepped before the camera in 1912 and rode across the border as the dashing Captain Alvarez for Vitagraph two years later. Yet acting soon felt like standing still; in 1914 he traded marquee lights for the director’s lens at Balboa and never looked back. American Film, Favorite Players, Pallas, Morosco, Fox, Famous Players-Lasky, Select, Realart, Paramount—each studio found a place for his signature blend of crisp storytelling and restless energy. War interrupted: 1918 shipped him to the British Army; 1919 brought him home to Hollywood and to the presidency of the Motion Picture Directors’ Association—not once, but three successive terms. Pickford, Farnum, Reid, Minter—he coaxed luminous performances from the era’s brightest constellations while guiding audiences through frontier legend in Davy Crockett (1915), river-boy mischief in Tom Sawyer (1917), red-haired dreams in Anne of Green Gables (1919), and raft-borne freedom in Huckleberry Finn (1920). On the night of 1 February 1922, a single gunshot froze his story mid-sentence; the crime has never been solved, leaving the murder of William Desmond Taylor among Hollywood’s most stubborn ghosts.
