Summary
An elderly patriarch, clutching the fading ink of a hand‑drawn chart, bequeaths to his grandson a cryptic map that promises a cache of buried riches. The document, however, is inadvertently consigned to a modest bookshop, where the proprietor and her inquisitive granddaughter, Mary, uncover its faded lines. Mary, accompanied by her aspiring novelist boyfriend, encounters the desperate heir, who is desperate to recover his inheritance. A fragile alliance forms, predicated on a shared ambition to locate the treasure. Their quest culminates not in glittering gold but in a modest wooden chest bearing a single, enigmatic inscription: "Good Health." The revelation that the entire scavenger hunt was a contrivance—an evaluative test devised by the grandfather—unveils a concealed fortune held in trust, earmarked for the grandson's future. Simultaneously, Mary's paramour secures a publishing contract for his manuscript, and the duo's intertwined fortunes usher them toward a joyful engagement. The narrative weaves themes of intergenerational expectation, the alchemy of aspiration, and the paradoxical value of health over material wealth, all set against a backdrop of early‑twentieth‑century melodrama.
