Summary
In the soot-stained reality of post-revolutionary Moscow, Mstislav Sergeyevich Los, a visionary engineer, finds himself suffocated by the mundane struggles of the New Economic Policy era and the domestic friction of his marriage. His psyche seeks refuge in the stars, specifically a cryptic radio signal from Mars—'Anta Odeli Uta'—which he interprets as a beckoning from an advanced civilization. Meanwhile, on the Red Planet, Queen Aelita, the ethereal sovereign of a totalitarian, class-stratified society, observes Los through a colossal telescope, her fascination with the terrestrial 'other' blossoming into a forbidden cosmic romance. As Los constructs a rocket to transcend his earthly disillusionment, he is accompanied by Gusev, a battle-hardened soldier eager for fresh conquest, and Kravtsov, a bumbling amateur detective. Upon their arrival, the film shifts from gritty social realism to a Constructivist fever dream. The trio catalyzes a proletarian uprising among the Martian laboring classes, who are routinely placed in cryogenic storage when their utility wanes. The narrative oscillates between the geometric, avant-garde splendor of Mars and the psychological decay of a man who may be projecting his revolutionary zeal onto the celestial void to escape a murder he believes he committed.
